Core / Band 5- 12 / Attendance: Tracy Shoff, David Shoff, Ryan Tinker, Patrick McGinty, Brian Joyce, Anna Kiefreiter Where are we? What do we need? What needs should be addressed on March 8?
We are at awareness level as to Core Essential
Standards and what the elements of each standard is for the state of North Carolina.
We have studied the MACS band curriculum and reviewed that as well. Many of the MACS band standards match the standards in the NC Core Curriculum and are being met not through the use of essential standards but through our own curriculum.
I think before this workshop, many of us in the Band program were not aware of the curriculum that has been established in 2001.
We are in the process of revising the curriculum that has been in place since 2001.
We will be reviewing other curriculums, and adopting addendums or changes to the MACS curriculum to update and align with the core standards. We spent a large chunk of time on this endeavor.
Self Evaluation of what standards are being met and what ones do we need to incorporate into our classrooms.
We basically, made addendums to the MACS Band handbook.
Vertical alignment within band programs (i.e. elementary, middle school, high school)
We all made recommendations as to what we’d like the kids to know at certain levels as they enter into a higher program. (what the kids should know and be able to perform)
We also acknowledged that there is a need to emphasize skills in certain neglected areas. (Beautiful tone, terminology, counting rhythms, etc.)
Implementing standards with mindfulness to the NC Core Essentials and Macs Band Curriculum.
Comments: All of the MACS Band Directors will be meeting with Dr. Stan Michalski on March 27th to discuss our plans to update the curriculum. We will be reviewing curriculums from other school districts and making recommendations for changes. We will keep the standards from the common core as another source for our own Band Curriculum as well.
